I am a freshman at Harvard University currently planning to major in biology and minor in visual studies. Having a love for art and out-of-the-box thinking, I hope to make a positive impact on Raise4aCause using these skills. I want to show my peers that as long as one has a passion for helping others, the talents used to show this passion are unimportant.
Having grown up in an upper middle-class suburb, I am all too familiar with comfort and convenience; unfortunately, the things I have been blessed with are not resources available to everyone. Taking advantage of my opportunities, I hope to play an active role in helping not just in the community, but around the nation.
I also want to teach my peers that with their privileged upbringing, they have an obligation to share their blessings with the less fortunate. High school organizations aimed at promoting community service have trivialized and distorted volunteerism: it's no longer about helping others, but helping yourself. Many students see volunteering as an opportunity to gain required service hours or as another addition to a resume. I want to instill back into my generation an infectious, genuine desire for altruism. To give for the sake of giving.
We went to make an impact on the world one step at a time, contributing to causes that will hopefully inspire and have larger impacts in the long run. It’s time to give back, help others, and lead my peers to do the same.
